I've figured out a way to work around the issue in VirtualGL, so no action necessary. For reference, however, this was due to the use of a very large font with glXUseXFont(). VirtualGL tries to create a temporary pixmap to hold all of the glyphs, and due to the size of the font, this pixmap was more than 32767 pixels in width, which apparently exceeds some fundamental size limit in Xorg (but not, oddly, in the older XFree86 code on which TurboVNC is based.)
