Your concerns are noted: however, in my mind, branch, then tag is a better practice, and that's what we're going with for 0.1. As for the *.zip distros, also dually noted, however, I think with the pervasiveness of free programs that handle .tar.gz files on Windows (e.g., 7-zip [1], and Cygwin [2]), that *.tar.gz files should no longer really be an issue.
