I tried this approach for nodes, ways and relations and it seems to work. See

Having Geography as official type would be useful. But the current workaround
is so easy, that there is no urgent need for a built-in Geography type right
now. Nevertheless, I will test a bit if everything works well and will tell you
about problems if there are any
