In the special case of coastlines and lakes it would be feasable to have the land/sea bitmap generated directly from the data in the DB. The coastline checker produces shapefiles which can be efficiently checked for intersection... There's no particular reason why that can't be extended to other types of objects. Just lots of round tuits.
