Works for me, thanks. I hadn't added any other binmode changes as all 
the other file handling  was working ok for me  but at least it should 
now be safe on other fussy os's.

Nope, the browser status bar changes to 'Waiting for 
osmxapi.hypercube.telascience.org...' and then changes to done with no 
other visual change on the screen.
The call to http://www.informationfreeway.org/api/0.5/tile appears to 
redirect to http://osmxapi.hypercube.telascience.org/api/0.5/tile.
