Has the MySQL db become too big BTW? We currently store blank tile information for all layers in the blank db, although I am of the opinion that those "transparent overlay layers" e.g. captions, maplint don't need specific blankness entries. I never got round to disable the storing of blankness information for those layers though, which could help to reduce server load a bit.
