I was annoyed by the current [EMAIL PROTECTED] server, so I sat down for 2 days
and
experimented. Result is a reimplementation of the [EMAIL PROTECTED] server
which looks
and works kind of identically to the real [EMAIL PROTECTED] server.

It's currently up here: http://tah.openstreetmap.org/%7Espaetz/

If people like it and it performs well, this could be the base for a
next generation.

It's strengths:
1) Uses regular OSM username/password, no more hunting for an account
2) Current [EMAIL PROTECTED] client works nearly without modifications with it,
so
transitions should be painless. (A few lines need adaptation)
3) It uses the tileset-as-1-file concept for storing and serving and at
a first glance, this seems to look good. I didn't stress test it though.
4) It works like the old one, so requesting through informationfreeway
etc should still work like before.

I'll continue to hack on it during my spare time and let you know if/how
things progress. And I'll document it, of course.
