None of the current developers seems willing to invest the additional effort of 
maintaining a trunk/branch and do the merging, all have expressed that they 
rather see a client break once in a while and be able to quickly make changes 
on the positive side.

But what you propose is possible already today and does not require the current 
developers at all. SOmebody who wants a stable branch should jsut copy over the 
trunk into a _stable directory and merge changes from the trunk once in a 
while. I am sure not only Windows users would appreciate something like this. 
ALl that it takes is someone who is bothered enough to take action.
