I've been looking at the code a bit recently and notice there is a sort of automatic update mechanism in tilesGen.pl. It checks the version in version.txt against that from a URL - both show 2008090400 at present here. This seems to be different from the "update" button in the Windows GUI tah.pl that runs an "svn up" command, and seems to find updates more frequently than does the automatic method (I think it's found at least two today, one seeming to include new icons for osmarender).
I'm curious what the difference is (as a bit of a newbie still). I've not noticed the automatic mechanism do anything yet (though perhaps I've always updated in the Windows bit before starting the client).
