Hi, I am new to OSM and started to map an area a few weeks ago. In addition to streets and tracks I would also like to define hiking routes. I added the routes with JOSM and had to find out that they are not rendered on the map. I think that is fine, since most people are not particularly interested in these routes. However, it would be fine if I could render a specialized map (svg, pdf) for my own purposes.
In Osmarender I found some rules which allow to render routes in different colors. However, the color must be entered as osm attribute and I am not sure if this approach breaks the separation of data and view. I tried to extend these rules but soon found that pure xslt (without using a scripting library) is quite painful to place labels onto or near the ways which build the route. So I switched to orp and implemented two kinds of route rendering: detailed (z17) and overview (z14). Examples of the resulting maps can be found (temporarily) at http://78.47.21.51/routerendering. The work is still in an experimental state. Before I put more effort into it I would like to ask how people are rendering their routes now. What is the recommended way? Please apologize if this is the wrong list to put these questions, but there does not seem to be a list for osmarender or orp specific questions.
