The sentence about "not tagging for renderers" is the most mis-understood in all of OSM. It is true that whenever you suggest something pragmatic, there is guaranteed to be someone who chastises you for suggesting to "tag for the renderer". The phrase comes from a time when people did really stupid things. We had one specialist who would draw three adjacent ways through a forest, one tagged a cycleway, one a bridleway, and one a footway, to achieve nice rendering of three different hiking routes. Things like this - where you actually tag something *wrong* to get a nice map - are to avoid. There is, however, nothing against tagging for a renderer if it is done explicitly (as in "osmarender:renderName=no"), and there is also nothing against making things easier for everyone by having a node in your way every 5km instead of going 2000km without any node (or resisting to create ways with a five-digit number of nodes).
