For those that don't also follow the dev@ list, there is meanwhile one way with about 40,000 nodes, which has prompted people to discuss ways to stop mappers creating these giants. The existing large ways will be dealt with in one way or another; more than a few thousand is surely not ok because it creates problems on many fronts. Jochen has today built a large way check into the OSM Inspector, so you can see where the ways with more than 1,000 nodes are: http://tools.geofabrik.de/osmi/?view=geometry .
