The someone was me and the reason to create this icon was that is has
the same color scheme used for bus stops here in Germany (so I hoped at
least some people would recognize "public transport") at it is different
enough from all the symbols that are used be subway operators and are
likely to be copyright protected.
A better drop in replacement icon is of course welcome, but
http://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/1254 waited long enough without
anybody suggesting an icon.
