Many decades ago, before high-voltage diodes were available, I constructed 4 KV, 50 ma klystron power supplies using strings of 600-volt PIV, metal-case diodes mounted on commercial Bakelite terminal boards. After soldering, I sprayed the entire board heavily with Krylon high-voltage spray intended for television receivers. These supplies operated for many decades without any problems.
