There are MANY versions of 5680A. Some definitely do need 5 V input to work. From this thread, apparently on the ones that do need 5 V input, different versions even use different pins for this voltage.
Seems an odd choice by FEI to have so many flavors, all called 5680A and looking nearly identical, to design and keep track of.
