Hello time-nuts, Just wanted to update the list on this thread, and hopefully put it to bed.
After my initial post, Mike Cook mentioned that he found the spec for the GN-GGB0710 as being 5/8-11. This makes a lot of sense since this is the standard size for surveying tripods and range poles (you can look at the original post to see what the actual thread pitch on the unit was). Brooke Clark suggested to me of using a tap to chase the threads. I acquired a 5/8-11 bottoming tap and it does the job wonderfully. It produces a fair amount of brass chips, and at a higher rate the deeper you go. But, it does not eat up the threads too badly and allows my 5/8-11 bolt to go in as far as I want (instead of just a thread or two). I guess my conclusion is - watch out for these units, they may be 5/8" but not really 11 TPI. Chasing the brass insert with a real 5/8-11 tap fixes the problem. Thanks for you help time-nuts.
