Gigabit ethernet (1000BASE-T) runs at 125MHz - 8ns. So even if you have hardware level timing, you will need sub-cycle accuracy if you are going to get near 500ps. You might get more info if you tell us the make/model of your board. Somebody might have one and have run some tests. If you have a URL for the data sheet, that would help. -- These are my opinions.
