Windows XP does not hard code time.nist.gov, it is merely one of the
default options. The default poll rate for a Windows XP client is also
604800 seconds (or as stated below, 1 week).
You can, however, modify the poll rate to 1 second and the Windows XP
client will not complain and will perform at a rate of 1 query per second.

I'd also forgotten that Windows XP hardcodes time.nist.gov as well. I
wonder how many dinky Windows machines are spamming this stratum 1
clock?
Given that the Microsoft client make one SNTP query per week I suspect
it's not too bad.
