Regarding the number of clients:
I have a server that's permanently in the "pool.ntp.org" DNS (it's
one out of thirteen IPs).
Out of the last ~50000 "A record" DNS lookups to one of the DNS
servers for pool.ntp.org, about 19000 were for "pool.ntp.org" (rather
than {0-3}.pool.ntp.org or one of the country or continent zones).
After being in the pool for about a month this particular zone is
doing ~650 queries per second.
That's what I know. The rest is mostly speculation.
Most ways I do the speculation I end up with the number of clients
well above 1 million.
For example, you can extrapolate the 650rps to something like ~15-20k
requests per second across the pool.
Estimate the clients wait ~512 seconds between each request and you
are close to 10 million.
Your guesses are as good as mine. :-)
