Well, we in .nl can get jealous as well...  over here the offered rate 
usually is 1Mbps up, 20Mbps down.
This means the uplink rate is not much better than with ADSL, but there 
usually is more noise margin when ADSL2+ modems are used.
I would like to have the higher uplink speed they have in the UK.

There are plans to convert the entire network into some VDSL type here, 
too.  The local exchanges will be closed, and the equipment will all be 
moved into street cabinets closer to the customers.  Everything will be 
IP from there.
This is interesting, as currently the network is ATM and internet access 
is offered over it via PPPoA.  I presume when everything is implemented 
over IP the underlying network will no longer be ATM.

Let's hope we can get rid of PPPoA (and the associated equipment 
trouble) before that network conversion is being done.
