I would agree - this sort of equipment would be best placed with a

comparing the accurate clock with values obtained from the pool).

I suppose it depends on what the goal of the Hardware Giveaway is; if the purpose is to put equipment in the hands of enthusiastic hobbyists who would otherwise have no means of affording something like a LANTime, then I agree with you both that the equipment should go to a private individual.

All that being said; yes I work for an ISP, and yes I think the LANTime is cool, and yes I want to play with one which is why I make the argument that giving it to an ISP (namely the one I work for) is a good idea. :)

I would guess the goal for the Hardware Giveaway is to introduce a large number of NTP fanatics to those nice products, and for people like you to think "well, maybe it would be a good idea to get one or more of those at work", then order (and pay) them.

I suggested to give it to Turk Telecom, because so many of us have complained about their use of the pool. But, those folks probably can afford to buy one
themselves just as well.

Until recently, I (as a hobbyist) had a server synchronized to a longwave radio receiver and two GPS receivers. Mainly for fun and to test the gpsd software. But the system to which those receivers were connected failed, and now I have a temporary shortage of COM ports for this setup. However, I will rebuild it as soon as possible. This confirms your point about hobbyist servers, but I still provide NTP service (synced to some others), and short failures are usually not that important with NTP.
