I still see spikes, but they're much much smaller than on the old system. Right now I get spikes of about 3x, they move me from my usual 11 requests / second up to about 30 requests / second. Maybe even more in one single second, take a look at http://www.somebits.com/ntp/four%20hours.html. But that's way better than the 20x spikes I used to get for up to 200 requests / second.
The spike you're pointing to looks like it's about an 8x jump in your traffic, from 500 bytes/sec to 4000 bytes/sec, or about 6 requests a second to about 50 requests / second. There's always going to be some spikiness, both because of random fluctuation and because of DNS caching. But the spikes seem much milder now; for that I am grateful.
