((((((( The Trommetter Times Update: Does HIPAA Affect Churches? )))))))

                           February 17, 2004

Based on my understanding of HIPAA, I don't think churches have
to alter their prayer habits to avoid running afoul of the law.
The 1st Amendment protects churches from the government.

xty-five
pairs of hands joined in prayer Wednesday night at St. Mark United
Methodist Church, a circle of faith beaming up prayers for the sick.
... "We pray, eternal God, right now for Precious Gamble." In times
past, the prayer might have been a little more specific &mdash; "for
Precious Gamble, who is still in the hospital after a stem cell
transplant for sickle cell disease," perhaps. </cite>"</p>
<p>Based on my understanding of HIPAA, I don't think churches
are covered by the law. Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, hospital workers
are all covered but I don't see any way the church can violate HIPAA.
Remember, the 1st Amendment protects churches from the goverment.</p>
