I looked at the python EGG system while learning Python. I think it has all the right intentions just not a good following.... Personally I would push for a executable binary that self extracts and puts things where they go and then runs a script for the user to set up some values. See Google Earth v4 for Linux for a demo of how it works. I personally love to install from source.
