I may be missing your point but ... I didn't check in new version, but I expect this is standard behaviour. Roles are assigned to users. They specify what users have to do to let the workflow progress. If you need a similar behaviour for something new, first create/adapt the workflow, then assign roles, and magically, users who need to make an action have a button on their forms to do it.
