I think what you want to use is the UOS. UOM is used as internal unit and if for some reason you sell a product in another unit you should use the 'Unit of Sale' which is linked to UOM via the 'UOM->UOS coefficient'. Unfortunately this functionality which was working in previous versions (e.g. 4.0.3) is not working in v4.2.0:
