We did a few months ago some work on that area preparing a demo for a venture capital managing firm. They needed multicompany with track of the shares between companies, etc... It was just a proof of concept and not really functional (sadly adding some fields does not bring the functionality ;) )
I think that the current structure is good for the general case but maybe you found a niche area for a new module [Idea] Actually I think that this module would be usefull for certain localizations in multicompany if you need to consolidate accounts. Actually there's not such a thing as a consolidation module in OpenERP and unfortunately the consolidation laws may be different in each country. However, taking into account the percentage of participation and maybe some other fields is a must in order to create such a module. Actually the company structure can get rather complex, so I would say that and nothing prevents companies from doing all kind of strange things with shares (at least if they are not on an official stock exchange...). One should know not only the direct participation on the rest of the group by a company, but also thru indirect participations AND at any time...
