Such a module is not a bad idea at all. Maybe just adding some sort of "publish" method on the objects that you want to be published would be enough. This "publish" method would create an "events" object with the required fields (date_start, date_stop, type of event, owner and description).
This method could be invoked either from workflows, automatically on certain events or even manually. You could extend the events to be monitored just writing a small code for the model that you want to publish.... A similar "unpublish" method could also be used in case of cancellations, etc. No need for a UNION view, and rather simple.... Nice ideas...
