Dear All,

It is with utmost concern that I have just read the discussion about migration
scripts as a payable service.
This strange idea entirely breaks the openness off the otherwise brilliant
OpenERP ideology: YES - I have to pay, if I need service for implementation and
quick bug fixes, but upgradability is, by all means, such a crucial thing that
it becomes frankly unethical to charge for this important step. Sorry, I am
very clear and harsh here, but this IS SIMPLY NOT ON!
Why? To give you an example, let's proceed: I am in the process of
implementing, with a lot of personal effort, but also great joy using this
terrific piece of software, a nation-wide medical equipment and maintenance
management tool for a country that is dubiously blessed with major problems in
this area. I have build a model that is going to be presented soon to the
government and their partners. Bingo - sounds terrific... the only problem is
that the country in question is Rwanda, which is in zero, zilch and no position
to play games costly migration scripts and the like. Essentially, you current
strategy swerves away from the open-source and free (but also free of anything
but community support!) idea - something that I have increasingly often seen
with business-centres (ERP) software. Money talks, obviously.
This makes me sad, angry and endlessly annoyed - seems you do not realise that
this stuff is not only used by companies and for-profit entities.
I thought I could be a harbinger of a truly smart, and at the same time truly
collborative piece of software that is borne by the community of its users.
Seems I have been mistaken - or haven't i?
I look forward to your comments, and demand an urgent revision of this highly
dangerous development that will eventually convert OpenERP into ClosedERP.
Thanks for your work, time, comments, and above all - revision of this
dangerous development.
