My preferred approach would be to have a configurable option on the server that prevents publishing a dblist. So instead of returning a list of databases, it should return some parameter that the clients can interpret.
If a client retrieves this returncode it should display a text input box instead of a drop-down menu, so users have to enter the name of the db.
