+1 for Stability of the stable branch How this will be accomplished can be discussed further, both mentioned options are viable but we have more possibilities i think.
I want to add a third one: The option to import code changes and customizations in a different layer. The user has to specify the layer in where he will be working. The layer function is nothing more then a searchpad to follow by openerp when executing some code. That way standard code can always into the standard layer. Updates can be in a update layer and tested in company before the majority will switch to the tested layer. On top of that customizations (or localisations) are held. With a simple diff the update-changes in standard can easily be ported to the customization layer! This will make live, maintenance, customizations and testing for a company much easier.
