After installed portal_* modules you will get wizard in partner form called "create user". Run that wizard will ask you for portal. select a portal for which you want to create user and continue. It will generate user name and password automatically. give that username and password to your customer/supplier. They can login with their user and it will provide restriction on configured objects.
