what you are saying has nothing to do with the FTP integration.
OpenObject exposes its own documents via FTP, but that's not a standard FTP 
server because the filestorage has not a human-readable structure (like many 
other DMS) to avoid file names conflicts.
So, at the moment you cannot use something like proftpd as a frontend for 
OpenObject document module.

Btw, you can split off OpenObject server at least into two different servers

1. OpenObject server
2. PostgreSQL server

then you can have:

3. OpenObject Web Client server
4. Apache server
