I was (and still am) also confused by what is referred to as bank reconcilation 
in Open ERP. Here's the (not particularly nice) way we're doing it in case it's 
any help:

1. When registering payments in Open ERP, force the period to the same period 
as the bank statement you expect the payment to appear in.

2. When you have the bank statement, list all the entries for the bank account 
in Open ERP for the corresponding period.

3. If everything is correct, the total receipts and payments should be the same 
as your bank statement. If not, compare each entry with the bank statement and 
resolve each difference found (you can change the period of an entry in form 
view).

4. As an aside, once everything matches, if you select the bank account in the 
chart of accounts and click the print button, and select all verified periods, 
the balance should match the bank statement.
