I've voted for develop from scratch because we can do much better than the alternatives. Koo already provides all User Interface features needed and one can easily show any view in full screen mode (see koopos.py) and modify its appearance using stylesheets. Even a virtual keyboard is provided [1].
It also supports using a barcode reader attached to the serial port (and of course any barcode with keyboard emulation). The only things missing would be credit card support, which is also pretty simple to implement (at least the methods implemented in OpenBravoPOS as I took a look at them some time ago). The rest of views could be implemented using OpenERP making it very powerful and flexible (not everybody needs the same for a POS). Also we have a proof of concept for a form view being shown in an SVG image which could lead to custom and appealing desings of dinning rooms, for example.
