Thanks. FYI: I also also only just notices that attachements/documents can be uploaded directly via the Openerp interface.
Go to a partner, attachments, new, give the attachment a name and upload it. The attachment has a name (free text), filename and a notes field (multiline text) I tested with a jpg image (it can be previewed) and a PDF (can be downloaded after). I uploaded attachments to an invoice and a partner in this way. So the SFTP/FTP interface is not such an urgent issue for me any more :-) Also, the SFTP server needs an SSH public key to be stored in the user settings, for each user login.
