The module base_contact allows you to define relations between partners (entities with which you do business), contacts (people) and the functions of these contacts at the partner. One contact may have a several functions at different partners and one partner may have several contacts with a function each. The focus of base_contact is an internal relationship between the partner and the people that work for these partners. The lifetime of this relationship is long and stateless.
The CRM module is oriented towards the relationship your company has with these partners and is focused on cases. Such a case may have different flavors (lead, opportunity, claim, bug, meeting, ...) but always concerns something to be done to bring it to an end. Cases are in a state (draft, open, pending, closed, canceled) and have a limited lifetime.
