Ok after reading up on the bsl it does use the serial for programming and the added hardware is just there for putting it into that mode and as an on board JTAG.

Can UART0 be used for the bsl?

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I am looking to use the serial port to talk with another device.  What I was thinking was that I could cut the UART1RX and UART1TX lines before they go to the I/O buffer and reroute them from the MSP430.  The only problem is that I am not sure that the bsl does not send signals over these lines when the mote is reprogrammed.

I would be interested to hear how you get on going down this route - I
am thinking of doing exactly the same thing to enable the use of a
peripheral device during normal operation, only using the USB for
reprogramming.
