8x5 unit8_t matrix has only 40bytes, how could it be out of memory.
it is the bug in your code to run out of the boundary of memory.

Out of memory question.
Im'using tmote-sky that have a Texas Instruments msp430 with 10KB of RAM
and 1024 KB of flash ROM.
When I compile my code the compiler tells me:
9496 bytes in ROM
471 bytes in RAM
but when I run it, my motes make strange things like reboot or else.
Everything worked well untill I use a 8x5 matrix of unit8_t.
Is it a bug in my code? Or is it an out of memory.
The question: my codes have to be (ROM+RAM) << 10KB ? Not only RAM?
Of course with Tossim everything works well.
