To complete the post with an answer to my question for the benefit of anyone searching the posts:
I found that sending to OP2 register will trigger the Multiplier Ready trigger. In otherword, the trigger is set when the multiplier finishes a multiplication operation, not really when it is "ready for a new operand".
Thanks for the link the MSP430 digital filter design, which I have read before, but for reference they use a Timer to trigger the DMA transfers.
