I have a question regarding USB-to-Serial converter cables: do they need to support the Interrupt Transfer mode of USB operation?

When I attempt to download to my MIB510 with "make mica2 download", UISP can send a command or two, but then UISP hangs and the board exits programming mode (not necessarily in that order).  My USB-serial dongle says (on the last page of the instruction manual) that it doesn't support Interrupt Transfer mode, which is used for things like mice and joysticks which need to interrupt the normal mode of USB operation, which is to poll each device in sequence.

Thanks!
