How high off the ground do you have the motes?  To get good transmission distances I would recommend to you that you place them at least 1 yard off the ground, 2 yards is even better.  I have done range testing with the standard antenna and some external antennas in an open hay field.  We had similar results to what you are getting when they are on the ground.
