I want to place all of the crickets on the ground in a small grid topology
and then I want to use them in a symmetric configuration i.e. each cricket
becomes a beacon in a while and its neighbors estimate their distance to
this beacon.

The design of the Cricket assumes that beacons are mounted on the cieling,
facing down, and listeners are on the ground, facing upwards. What are you
using the Crickets for?
