Are only certain message formats acceptable for transfer over
BaseStation-enabled motes?

I'm using BaseStation and TinyOS 2.x, and sending raw packets over serial by
hand. At first I
thought I could use any message type I wanted. That is, I thought I could
randomly assign bytes
for the dispatch id and payload parts of the serial protocol, and it would get
passed on, so
long as I got the basic serial protocol right (the framing bytes, the crc,
etc.).

However, I found that such arbitrary packets, while acknowledged, did not make
it to the other
side. (I also found an interesting case in which the missing pieces of an
incomplete active
message were filled in.)

I'm trying to employ the motes as an artificial wireless network of sorts.

So, what message types may I and should I use? I want to know what is possible
as well as what
is advisable. It would also be nice to have some kind of reference I could
cite on the issue.

Does AM Multihop still exist in 2.x versions?

Sincerely,

Jon.

P.S.: Did that python problem ever get resolved? I'm afraid I got rather
distracted.
