I'm not sure the question is still open. I just call make with the
appropriate platform, but without the install option. I then use the AVR
studio and install the generated .hex file.
If you need to set the node id, you could probably tweak the make file
such that it generates the .hex file and updates the node id variables,
but without trying to install the program on a device. Alternatively you
might even be able to call AVR studio with command line arguments to use
it as yet another installer.
