If the antenna is mismatched, it will have a great effect on range, but I'm not sure about the actual power dissipation. My gut says that there should be no effects on actual power dissipation -- during transmission at maximum power on the CC2420, the digital circuitry and signal generation draw about 7-8 mA and PA draws about 10 mA; all of this to generate a 1mW signal. I would expect that a mismatched antenna would affect the output power and but I expect that would affect only the actual output of the radio signal (which would end up consuming at most 550 uA at 1.8V).

Just out of curiosity, says the cat... If the antenna system is mismatched would that affect the actual power usage or just the output power?
