Typically, the MEMS accelerometer outputs do not get affected by change in magnetic field. So, this behavior could in fact be something to do with the surge code. Since I am not familiar with the surge application too well, I would suggest you to program the Motes using xmesh>XMTS310 app provided with MoteView and see if you can duplicate this dependency behavior using MoteView>XServe.
