I am deciding on the motes to use for a soil sensor data collection
network in the US. I like the range of 433 MHz MICA2 motes, but I am
concerned about FCC regulation 15.231. My concern is that it limits the
output power to the point that this frequency loses its value. Has
anyone looked in-depth at this issue?
My understanding is that a data collection network such as mine cannot
use the paragraph (a) power limits. Paragraph (a) systems seem to be
limited to control-based systems, like a garage-door opener or a keyless
entry system for a car.
In this case the data collection network must use paragraph (e) power
limits. This means the EIRP of the transmitter must be no greater than
-22 dBm peak, or no greater than, say, -5 to -10 dBm peak for a
transmitter with a small duty cycle.
