We're using the following Dell notebooks with Ubuntu Feisty with good results.  
We work with msp430 based motes, so I can't give you feedback WRT the AVR 
tools.  Combine this with the stanford apt repository, and you have a pretty 
easy install and update environment for TinyOS development.
