No ideas about the downloadable VM from my side, sorry. I didn't even
notice that it is there ;-)
But you might want to try to create your own virtual machine for VMware
player (e.g., use easyvmx.com), and afterwards inside install from the
live CD image (as this is based on Ubuntu, it also features a full
installer). That works perfectly for me.
